Question Fuse Links

Does anybody know at what amperage a fuse link starts to overheat and melt?
Also what amperage can they carry safely with out overheating?
Mostly interested in 12 GA, 14GA and 16GA fuse links.

Thanks

We tried to find this out a couple of months ago, and never could find anything. The only thing I found was the fusible link is always 4 times smaller than the wire it is protecting.

You would think you could figure out the wire size it is serving, look at the amperage rating for the served wire, and figure out when the fusible link should blow to protect the wire. The rub is I cannot find a standard the automotive people use for sizing the current capability of their wiring. I did find one for marine wiring. And if you compare it to NEC house wiring, they push way more amps through a wire than the house wiring guys do.

If you look at the fusible link applications, one conclusion you can draw is they seem to be protecting circuits above 30 amps, since the fuse box will have 25 and 30 amp fuses supplied from a fusible link. So if you wanted to replace a fusible link, you would probably have to use a high rated maxi fuse.
