Offroading and stalling......

This may seem a bit of an odd question, but here I go advertising my ignorance.... When offroading, is it a particular problem for a 7.3L IDI to bog down and stall the engine? I'm not asking if this is a common thing, but rather would this harm the engine or cause fuel feed issues? I'm looking at buying one and I do a little bit of offroading a handful of times a year. With my current gasser I sometimes have to let it dig until it stalls the engine (always holding on to that last strand of hope...). Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Unless you're trying climb a hill in 4th or 5th I can't picture a IDI bogging out and stalling.

Diesels are great off0road vehicles because of the incredible low-end torque that they produce. They just dig in and keep on going. As far as damaginf fuel feed issues - nope, no problem. The IDI's use a mechanical injection pump that is gear driven off the crankshaft. When the engine quits turning, the fuel quits flowing. There are none of the 'hot start' problems that you experience with carbureted gas motors. Push in the clutch, turn the key, and you're rumbling. Now, as far as lugging goes, the danger here is the same as with any gas motor. Lugging (operating the enigne below it's power curve) sets up harmonics in the crankshaft that can cause journals to snap. End of crankshaft, end of fun. The 7.3 IDI is a great mudder motor. There's folks on this list that'll be glad to attest to that. But if you plan on abusing it, I'd look for a cheaper engine.

I would never take my truck in the mud.
