Now, the previous owner of my truck did construction; maybe he abused it or did stupid things to it that precipitated the premature death of the muffler. I swapped the factory muffler for glasspacks, and it runs real well. Makes me wish it had a sport suspension. :-)
If your muffler was plugged, I would also check out the cat.
Hopefully Ford won't redesign the Ranger! The Ranger is the only pickup that Ford currently makes that still looks like a truck. My fiancee and I just bought a 2000 Ranger 2wd regular cab shortbed with an inline 4-cyl and auto trans. It's a sharp looking little truck. She uses it as a commuter vehicle to drive to and from work and it gets about 25 mpg. I heard a rumor that Ford may discontinue the Ranger in a couple of years and make the F150 their small truck. That would be a big mistake in my opinion, because I think there will always be a market for the smaller Ranger pickups, and not everyone likes the new F150s.
I'm glad to hear they brought back the ext. cab with the 4-cyl engine. I have an '87 and I really enjoy this platform. Hopefully my old one will last till 2009 or so, then maybe I'll be in the market for a used '06 ext. cab with the four banger.
ford has to redesign if they want any sales. thats pretty much been proven with a steady decline in sales over the years. they also might have to drop it/use the F150 as the small truck if the market keeps moving this way. look at the size of the dakota, its the size of a half ton pretty much. im not so sure if there is still a market for trucks the size of the ranger even right now. i would never want to see the ranger go away though. and a V8 is never to much. if they do ever put a V8 in it hopefully it will be an actual V8 instead of what dodge did with the dakota. the V8 in the dakota is mearly a saleing point, nothing more. the damn jap 6s are making the same amount of power and are faster too. it may be a truck but a V8 should be faster than a V6 any day.
If your muffler was plugged, I would also check out the cat.
Probably I should. It got real happy without the muffler, so I figure the cat is OK; plus I bet I've gotten the cat hot enough to burn out the garbage while I was "enjoying" the Thrush Magnum glasspacks.
Flowmaster series 50, local shop's doing a full catback for it.
It's one of my Christmas gifts, so I gotta wait until mid-December to actually have it done. Kinda sad about it.
Heard a series 50 on a Ranger on the WWW and about drooled, sounds good, kinda raspy which is what I wanted, even though some people don't like it. I had a stainless exhaust tip on my tailpipe, it was restricted a bit but open at the back, hard to explain, but it made the truck sound deeper, almost as if it was struggling to stay alive, kinda muscle car sound, I told the muffler guy I wanted that, just a lot louder. He said 50 was the way to go.
I tore the internet up trying to find a kit for a regular cab Ranger, zero luck. Everything is for extended cabs. I figured I could just cut part of the tubing off, but I dunno how to weld, so I decided just to let the local shop do it and told my parents, and thus it became a Christmas gift. Fine with me!

Just read in the paper today that Ford is going to close the St. Paul MN factory - which makes Rangers. Cites a decline in sales of 25% from a year ago (don't know if that is only Rangers or across all lines).
if ford does anything to the ranger they should offer a crew cab. they it could be in class with chevy canyon and dodge dakota, and nisson etc. and if they offered a v8 it could out do the dakota 5.7 maybe. but with epa and fuel regulations it hard to say. though a v6 may offer more hp. a v8 "usually" offers way more torque. and torque in a truck is where it counts. my own opinion.
p.s. bring manuel hubs back.
They do have a crew cab-Its called the Explorer Sport Trac.
I cant imagine why anyone would want a Sport Trac. How many of y ou have seen people doing any real hauling in one of these? I haven't. The four foot bed is useless.
If you need more then what a compact (Ranger) can offer hauling-wise, get a full size pickup. If you haul more people then cargo, get a regular Explorer(my wife has one and we have plenty of room for passengers and cargo)
The new "compact" pickups that are offered (this includes the Sport Trac) dont have the comfort of an SUV nor the usefullness of a pickup. They are not very good on gas, either. I had a rented Chevy Colorado crew cab over a weekend when my old '99 Ranger was getting a new hood put on and I couldn't even get my mountain bike to fit in the stupid four foot bed! We also tried to use it go shopping while it was raining, and there wasnt enough room for the grocerys, me, my wife and step daughter to ride comfortably.
