part 1: first off 1964 f100 long bed 292 with ford-o-matic tranny
first problem if I hit brakes hard engine dies. low idle? not enough vacum? help!
part 2: now when I hit brake hard, not enough to kill engine but hard enough to stop faster than I would like, the flywheel seems to be hitting something (annoying noise.) if I put it in neutral rev it up a liittle noise usually goes away sometimes I have to do this twice. what givs??? any one experience this before? any help would be appreciated. I know it's a 40 year old motor but dam does it run good or at least I think so.

Check motor and trans mounts for wear and tear. Also make sure you converter nuts to flywheel are tight. What happens when you put in gear and hold your foot on the brakes and give it some gas? Is the noise there at that time? I wonder if your starter drive is moving on the shaft and hitting the flywheel teeth? Does it engage ok when you start it? A few what if's..........
Hey Barry, tried it in gear both in reverse than in drive no problems, (put a nice mark of rubber in my garage) the starter will stick if I don't turn key back a little when I start it. if I just start truck like normal the starter will stay engaged is it time for a new starter?
could just be the starter loose or in too far 66 had to be shimmed about a 1/16 of an inch out. Turned out the shim plate wasn't between the tranny and engine.
ON his 64, the drive is different than the 66 trucks. If the starter wasn;t in the proper depth, it would make a racket when he started it up. His noise is at a sudden stop. Sounds like the drive is sliding into the flywheel. When he revs it up , the centrifical force sends it back away from the flywheel. You need the shim plate on the later trucks.
