I'm sure I've been here before, but the great thing about a bad memory is it gets easier all the time... I'm looking for a polyurethane rag joint for my 66 standard steering, can any one help me? Many thanks...now where did I leave my keys?
I purchase one from a non sponsor vendor for around $27.50; shipping cost me $10 or so; The only varence was later model 66 according to the one I purchase change alittle.
I will check my local dealer Ford parts department prior to purchasing one again and paying $47.50 a pop.
The one in the Help section is an OE version. The original type is not polyurethane as SeeTwisted started this thread looking for. Evidently the newer design is much stronger than the OE type. Either one works fine IMO.
First, thank you everybody for replying. The help section parts work just fine,I've gotten good at slipping them in and out.My truck seems to like to eat them up about every year or two and the steering always feels so nice and tight when they are reletively new.I saw a polyurethane one on ebey one time and thought COOL but the bidding got to what I thought was stupid so shined it on thinking that I'd just find out who makes them...it hasn't been so simple.Anyway,I drove my last ford truck 23 years and only have about 6 years in this one, so I figure I still have plenty of time to find parts for this one.And this one is newer(66,) last one was a 57.THANKS AGAIN for your time
Using one up every 2 years?
How is that possible... I have a '72 with Manual steering and the factory rag joint is still just fine... I have had 7 ford trucks and only ever replaced one...
Now there's my thought also...I've checked the alignment of the steering box and column and everything looks straight, but I keep looking. And I keep looking at how close the rear tube on the headers comes to the steering joint...maybe a little heat-shield?
I looked at the cab mounts...the rubber looked good,(to me...) and all of the sheetmetal is sound. But now that you have me thinking about it again, maybe the way I drive has the cab moving so much that it could be stressing the rag joint??something new to look into in the morning...thanks for the thought.
Speaking of rag joint issues. When I replaced mine the two flanges were so far apart that the thing looks like its in a bind. It's not flat like it should be. Instead it's kind of wavy looking. I'm sure this is why the old one wore out. I was thinking that I could release the clamps or whatnot that hold the steering column in place and lower the column a bit. Hopefully without shift linkage problems. Just thought I would pass this by everyone while on the subject. Any ideas?
The column can be moved a little bit up/down(closer/farther?) to line up the rag joint better. You might need to adjust the shift linkage to correct for the movement, but it shouldn't cause any binding issues.
The more I've tinkered with mine, the more ways I've found to line the column up.I've had the inner tube out,Ive changed bearings, spacers, shims, adjustments and just about anything that would unbolt...the rag joint lines up so nice and straight, when I change one, I pull the bolts out and the old joint slips out while the new one slips right back...and still I'm whining,or maybe I just expect too much........n-o-ot.
