Well it took me a long time but i finally got out to the junkyard and pulled a door. Im finished painting it and everything. Its bolted on to the truck but its not aligned at all. Ive been trying to align it but with little luck. Is there an easier way to do this? Its on a '78 f150.
There area few way's to do it. Some harder than others. I align doors with the front fender off. I prefer to do it that way. I bolt the door on, then gently try to close it. If it closes and latches, I then loosen the hinges and set the gaps. If it doesn't close right, I move the door around until it does, then adjust gaps. Once you have it so the gaps look good, tape a piece of string to the body molding indent (the concave portion of the body) on the top or bottom it doesn't matter. Tape one end to the box, somewhere in the middle, and one end to the front of the door. Use the string to fine tune the door. The string should run straight along the door, the cab corner, and the box when you have the door on straight. Reinstall and align the fender and enjoy.
My mistake when aliging the doors on the 73-79 was to have the top of the door too far away from the body. Oddly enough the rest of the door can look OK with the top out too far. The weatherstrip will never make good contact though.
You guys are going to laugh but what i did on my 79 150 was i put the door on barely, closed it and pushed into place. after it was good i carefully opened the door and tightened. worked for me or mabe i was lucky.
