You can look in the classified to see who has a bronco or F-150 for sale from the late 80's to early 90's. I picked up a 90 Bronco a couple of years ago that had a bad valve in it and it had EFI in it. That way you can get all the equiptment to run the engine properly. I picked the whole unit up for $350.00. My son used the front clip on his truck and I have the engine and running gear waiting for some project that may come along. My wife just doesn't understand why I have all this stuff in storage. Imagine that. It has kept the kids going for quite some time and I don't have to go to the junkyard as often either. One question. Is your daughter going to help in the transformation of this truck? Hopefully so. If there is some sweat equity she will appreciate it more and take better care of it. I realize that they have to go out and exercise the beast from time to time. Yes my son knew what the right pedal could do on all his toys. Good luck.
Thanks to all you guys for your advise. At least now I feel I have some options. I would like to ask another question. How can I tell if I have an altinator or genorator on this 289? I plan on rewiring the whole truck but how do I tell if its a 6v or been changed with the 289 to a 12 volt?
Voltage meter across the battery is a sure fire test but the battery should say what it is. Generator v. Altenator was explained above.
My 1950 f-1 has the original rearend in it. This truck will only be used for my daughter's daily transportation to school, about 20 mile round trip. I am interested in millage. What rear end from a salvage yard can I replace the old one with?
67-72 F-100, 9" rear end would be my choice if mileage were an issue. The case on these fits. If you don't care for the gear in what you get, you can always replace just the hogs head with one from a car. Just have to make certain the spline count matches up on the hogs head and the axles. To make this clear, the option I have outlined above may require the purchase of two rear ends to get what you want for a gear. The truck rear end I mentioned is favored because the spring pads are in the right location for your 50 F1.
Check at the top of the forum in the tech articles section. There is a good list of which 9" rear ends fit and which don't.
From experience and simple math: I would have to agree with AX. And the Holley projection system sucks big time even when professionally installed and dyno tuned ( tried this system 3 times). Save the $$,,change the rear, have a lightfoot, get O/D. Easy, quick, great results. Have fun, good luck to you and daughter. my.02
