I got a 77 ford 2wd w/351m, and just changed brake pads front and rear. front disc, rear drum. Now when I apply the brakes to stop the hole truck shakes, didn't happen before brakes were done, whats the verdict?
Did you have the front rotors and rear drums turned on a lathe before you installed the new pads and shoes? If not, then I would guess that is your trouble.
Or if you did have them machined I would guess that is your problem! I've been doing business with the same brake & muffler shop for over 30 years now, and they goofed up my rotors on the last brake job. Apparently it was a big goof up, cause the regrind still hasn't completely fixed the problem. It still shakes on braking. They said they mounted the rotor cockeyed on the first machining. Maybe your brake guy did the same. Good luck.
i agree with the above posts... sounds like crooked disk... my explorer has the same problem but i'm too cheap to have the disks planed... one note though... i bought one of those service packages the garages sell to get business... you know, free oil change, lube, inspection, flushes, discounts, etc. for 20$ i told the mechanic about the shaking and he got all eager and gave me a 400$ quote for new disks etc. without even looking at the brakes. not that this is pertinent to your situation but if you had this problem in a newer vehicle you might want to check for a bad ABS before you get talked into buying 400$ of new brake equipment. a simple way to check is does the shaking slow down proportionally with the speed of the vehicle? if yes then definitely bad disks. if not check you don't have a problem with the ABS first.
I think the problem is more likely that the rotors need turning. This is same problem on my first Ford Truck, a beautiful '73 F100 in great condition yet being used as a paint contractor's truck. They showed me on the test drive that something shakes when you apply the brakes. I acted stupid and used it to drive the selling price down. As soon as I got it home I did a front brake job and had them turned - problem disappeared.
If you're a guy who does his own brake work, you are saving a bundle and should take pride in yourself. If you can afford it set yourself up with a new pair of rotors - they are cheap if you do some shopping.
If you did have them turned then these other posts about bad turning are probably the answer. I'd focus on the fronts, the rears are less likely to be the culprit unless you definitely feel the shake in the rear.
i need to replace the disks on my explorer but can't afford to go with new ones. any advice on how to diagnose the longevity if i get them from the scrapyard?
can i use a tape measure to measure for the manufacturer's recommended thickness. i know my mom had the disks planed more than once cuz they were too small for the weight of the car so i don't want to buy some used that are no good.
can u tell by looking across the surface if disks are warped? the service station said they were warped by excessive braking that heated them but i kind of doubt this story?
could something have gotten caught inside that would have put one out of place.. ie not parallel with the wheel cuz shaking sometimes turns to knocking on only the one side when you apply the brakes hard?
Buying *Vernier Calipers* and taking those with you to the wreckers will give you a fair idea.Otherwise you will need an expensive micrometer for measuring accurately.
Of course, you need to know the discard measurement for your application.
Lots of rust can be a quick sight refusal.
Check for a shiny braking surface, this usually shows a person was either too cheap to replace them, didn't know to re-surface them,or they couldn't be re-surfaced anymore.

i posted this problem in the explorer section because my '92 explorer shakes too as well as a knock on the right side. one of the replies indicated to check if the brake assemble was mounted correctly. i only started that discussion in the first place because i saw the mechanic was more interested in adding up a 400$ quote for new disks than actually showing me the problem. please check the explorer discussion for 75 supercab's comments on this matter.
