my friends truck has the infamous lower intake gasket plague. It is knocking pretty bad, hydro locked on a start up. I guess its safe to assume a rod bearing, rod, and piston need to be replaced, as well as the gasket.
My question is this:
can a 4.6L be mated to the M5od tranny? different flywheels, etc?
I know its rated to 330ft-lbs so i'm not worried about the power. 4.6L motors aren't all that hard to find.
Is a mustang motor different than the truck motor as far as installation is concerned?
Are you sure internal damage occured? When my lower intake gasket failed, my truck knocked and banged on startup, but then smoothed out after a minute or so.
I went straightaway and had the gaskets replaced.
The engine was unharmed and ran perfectly when I sold it about 20,000 miles later.
I did get lucky. Maybe you did too?
Yes, the 4.6 was offered with the M5OD. But, I would not try the swap out. I have never known of anybody doing it (at least nobody here at FTE) an dI have been visiting this site for about 6 years.
Re: Mustang motor - I have no idea.
If damage was done, I'd get it fixed or replace with a reman 4.2.
This sounded and felt like a good solid rod knock. i will let it run and see if it smooths out, but i doubt it will. Thanks for the info though, i really appreciate it.
this is my friends truck who is really in a bind, so we're trying to get this thing back up and running asap.
I am 95% sure the mustang flywheel on the 4.6 IS different from the f150's. If a v8 is a must, keep in mind you 'll need a new wiring harness, pcm, and everything else associated specifically for the 4.6. I do know of one successful swap, but they went from 4.2 to 5.4 and it was a LOT of money.
I personally would suggest a reman. engine, like from Jasper, they have a great warrenty, or to do it yourself. Sounds like you are knowledgeable around a couple of wrenches. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
