After a year of sitting in the weeds after the camshaft broke last Christmas I am getting the old girl ready to work again. I have purchased a '72 390 and t-18 four speed to drop in. I have the front crossmember for the conversion ordered and have the rear transmission crossmember for the t-18. I will have to fab up some mounts for clutch linkage. I am stumped as to what to do for a emergency brake. The transmission that came out of the truck has the brake drum attached on the tailshaft. The t-18 doesn't have this set up. I am looking for suggestions on how to install some sort of parking/emergency brake.
The original transmission may fit your 390 bell housing, or the drum and band holder may bolt to the back of the T18. If not, you might look at the Dodge version of the T18 - I remember an old dodge 1 ton with the emergancy brake on the tranny.
I have measured the bolts on the back of both transmissions and the brake will not transfer over. The original t-38 transmission had a habit of jumping out of 4th gear and needs to be replaced. The pinion mounted brake is a good idea, however I didn't see a listing for two ton Eaton(?) axle.
Can you fabricate an adaptor plate to get it to work or could you make a new mounting plate that would work? If not you, then perhaps a machine shop? It would be my first thought. I do like the pinion brake option also. As suggested above, perhaps a different mount braket could be built if they do not make a dirrect bolt-on kit for the F-600.
this may not be what you want to hear but i my self might look into a clark 5 speed. they were an option at least in the bigger trucks and would probly have the e brake on it. also some of the clark 5 speeds are overdrive.
Yea a clark 5 speed would be ideal. But I have the t-18 matched to the 390, and the local wrecking yards don't carry stuff for bigger trucks. I may work the phone lines and see what I can find. I'm going to get the two transmissions side by side tomorrow and do some exact measurements, maybe I can figure something out.
