Red face Oh No!!!

Just finished shopping for gorceries tonight and was putting everything into the wife's Ex to head home when I shut the back window and CRASH - the rear window exploded like it had been shot out with a rifle!!! Got broken glass all in the grocery bags and back cargo area!

We took the kids and the groceries home and unloaded and then took the Ex over to the body shop for an estimate... we'll find out in a day or two how much this is gonna run. At least $500.00 cause that's what the deductible is on our insurance.

What a nice Christmas present!!!

05f350cc, if it is under warranty, go back to the dealer. they should replace it. if they say no, start yelling. seriously, start yelling.. there is no reason why you should have to go through your insurance company for this. all you did was close the hatch and nothing was in the way. make sure if you tell the dealer that you went shopping, that you were 100000000% sure that nothing was in the way. there has been other posts in this forum aboub the rear glass breaking on the X. good luck, keep us posted..

oh, go to the dealer right away. dont call them just go and demand what you want.

Racer,

A good idea, however our 12/12 warranty has expired! Actually, I had never thought of taking it to the stealer, but when you wrote this I looked up the date of purchase and it has been over a year. We are under the mileage part, but not the 12 months. And you know the dealer will use every excuse he can to get out from under this!

Oh well...if it happens again my wife is gonna replace the glass with lexan or sheet metal! LOL!

it isn's a 12/12. you should have a 3 year 36000mile bumper to bumper.

Ours did the EXACT same thing about 3 weeks ago. The glass shop said SUV back glass breaks are common. Its an "abused" design. Glass is not meant to be repeatedly slammed. The tech said if there is even the slightest flaw in the glass in casting, its only a matter of time. The changing temps that are present in the fall are also a contributor. Luckily mine was covered by my insurance, but the bill was over $700 to the insurance company. WOW

Our Expedition did the same thing about 2 years ago, while sitting in the hot garage. We were sitting in the family room and heard the POW. I went out into the garage and glass everywhere. The garage door was closed.

Cool

Well I called the stealer and told them about my window and their position is that in order for the glass to break there has to be an "impact" and impact damage to glass isn't covered under the warranty so they are not going to accept it.

This is the same dealer that when I brought my brand new truck back to them after finding a couple spots where the paint had been rubbed off the roof before I bought it (I found them after the sale - always go over your vehicle head to toe!), they said they wouldn't fix it because they had no record of there being any "shipping damage" on the vehicle.

So apparently, I'm on my own for both of these issues!

i'd be screaming at them. there is no way that paint should be rubbed off. how long was is when you brought the truck back to show them the damage? and with the window, yeah check with the insurance company, it might be free. i still be screaming and demand that something be done. GET THE GENERAL MANAGER, OWNER, AND FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE INVOLVED. ALSO THREATEN TO CALL YOUR LAWYER SO THEY CAN SETTLE THE DESPUTE THAT WAY.

I had the same thing happen to my X 6 months ago with about 15,000 miles on it. Closed the back hatch and the glass shattered, took it up to the dealership close to the house but not the one I bought the truck from & originally they said they would not cover it under warranty. I told them that was unacceptable & they need to talk to someone higher up, so they called the area rep for Ford & told him what happened & he said fix it under warranty. The dealer price on the glass was $1,500.

I would not accept NO from the dealer, be polite but be stern, very stern. Tell them you want to talk to someone higher up if they can't accommodate you.

200, When I Said That I Would Scream At Them, That Is What I Meant, BE FIRM BUT DON'T LOOSE YOUR TEMPER, IT DOESN'T GET YOU ANY FURTHER, JUST LESS COOPERATION FROM THE DEALER. I Used To Work At My Local Ford Dealer For Many Years So I Know That Something Can Always Be Done.

05,

it may be cheaper for you not to get your insurance company involved. the price is about 490.00 for that piece of glass.

Rear windows on Excurisons have been known to break at any time.

When I was cleaning out the 00 X (bought in 03 with 104K miles) I found a small piece of tinted glass that matched the rear glass. I decided to try the key in the key hole on the rear hatch and found out it didn't fit. Either the vehicle had the whold rear door replaced in an accident or the rear glass broke and the entire section was replaced.

I had vandolism on the front passenger side window and was replaced under my glass coverage for free no questions asked.

Anybody ever check into how much the large rear corner windows cost? $2,500 and $3,200 is list in the Ford Excursion insurance estimate book!!!
