I have a 95 F250 PSD with around 110,000 mile on it. I loaded up my camper which weighs rougly 3,000lbs with gear and my 4700 lbs boat and headed to the river to do some fishing. When I was pulling my boat out of the water I had to press down on the accelerator pretty hard to get the boat and trailer out of the water. I felt, what I would describe as, a slipping fealing coming from the transmission, so I stopped and dropped it all the way to the first gear and still had a hard time getting it out of the water and up the ramp. This is where my question starts, sence then the truck has a slight shutter when taking off from a stop and a more noticeable shutter pulling the boat from a stopped position. What do you think could have caused this and or be a fix to the problem. I haven't pulled the boat with the camper sence the shuttering has started so I don't know if this added weight would magnify the shutter or not. Could the tranny oil have overheated and needs replaced or is this a more complicated problem? Thanks, Todd
I did a little bit more research today and the fluid level is correct, checked at normal operating temp, the fluid is bright red and dosen't smell burnt. I called the dealership to find out what my mileage was at the time I had them change/flush the transmission and refill it and it was at 75,000 miles in 2003 and today there are 106,000 miles on it. I asked him a few question on corrective actions to take and he told me that the torque converter might be coming apart, or the disks might be burnt up. I'm not too sure about his suggestions but he did say that it is time for a fluid and filter change, this I agree, but is this a waist of money if the problem is something else that needs to be fixed or could this be the culpret. Thanks, Todd
Should I drain the system along with the torque converter and replace the fluid? It ran fine untill tried to pull my boat out of the water with my camper on it.
I've checked out someother threads and a lot of them talk about a flashing light with the O/D. Mine is not flashing so I don't think that there are any codes being created. Will a torque converter act up(shutter) if there is debris in it. It took a lot if power to get my boat out of the river with my camper on the back of my truck. It seemed like the tranny slipped for a long time before it engaged enough to pull the rig out and off of the ramp.
I thaught of that after I pulled it out. The truck ran fine untill i got home the next day and took every thing off, boat and camper and thats when I noticed the shutter at take off. Any Ideas? Thanks, Todd

If you'd like to understand how a torque converter works, go to this site and do a search for torque converter.
Inside, they're sort of like 3 fluid driven turbines (2 big, 1 small) working together to apply the engine rotation to the transmission, which selects which gear to use, and apply it to the drive shaft. Slipping and debri are not good things.

The sonnax spring kit and the biggest ATF cooler that you can find. Transmission temperature guage as well.
I think at this point I'm just going to try a complete fluid and filter change and see if that corrects the shutter. If that cures the problem I think I might drain off a little bit and try the Lucas additive that I have read a little about.Have you ever tried Lucas or any other anti shutter additives?
