what causes a u-joint to greanade? last night i was driving my 74 f250 4x and the rearmost u-joint on the stubby shaft that connects to the INPUT shaft of the t-case (np205), totally blew up. i was left stranded for 2 hrs until i flagged down a cop. in all the time i owned a ford truck, NOT ONCE has this happened to me--especially on this shaft. again, what causes it? needless to say, that short shaft is toast--it happened when i was cruising at around 60 mph
thanks
benj
Stress -When u-joints get dry from lack of lubrication, they keep turning untill the needle bearings seeze. Then the u-joints are alredy turning so fast they self destruct.
It's a good thing that you didn't have more damage than that. I've heard of driveshafts where u-joints go out swinging up and taking sheet metal with it.
