Ok we're putting a '90 roler rocker engien in our '66 F100, replacing the old '76-'77 302 that was in it. We did a few things to the '90 befoer puting it in the truck, one of which was installing an E303 cam.
We intended to use the distributor from the '76 engine. Took the old gear off the old dist and replaced it with a Crane steel gear. Problem is the distributor will not go down into the '90 block, stops about 3/8" short of going all the way in. Just will not go in any further. Is it that the older dist , even with the right gear is not compatable. Both the dist have the .467 shaft, btw.
sounds like the oilpump shaft is causing the hang up. might turn the motor over by hand with a wrench on the front pully with th dizzy in as much as possible it will drop in
Tried that. Was looking at it this am and something I had not taken note of was that the dist shafts are not the same length. The '90 shaft is about 1" longer than the '76. Gear sits at the same position, though. I had never set the two side by side befoer. I had only mic'd the shaft diameters. So is it safe to assume that the diff in length is what is causing teh problem????
Yeah, just found a Mallory dual=point with steel gear at Lane Automotive. In stock and just a short drive down I-94 from us. May have to send the boy for a short driver tomorrow!!!
Found this on the Mallory website while looking for info in there tech section on which would be the right dist forour use. Seems like all dists are not created equal! THis guy was using a '89 302 as oppossed to our '90, but discoverd the same thing. The older dist are too short and I guess in this case size/length does matter!!!
