I am looking to delete the EGR on a 1977 460 engine and replace the spacer with a phenolic unit. Did the same thing on a 1973 460 with very good results. However, the 77 has a spacer entry EGR plate instead of the floor entry like the 73. The phenolic spacer is square and will not cover the entry port thus allowing exhaust to get out under the hood. Anyone have an idea for closing this port? I figured just drop some JB Weld or acid core solder in there on top of a cotton ball. Perhaps some of you know of a less redneck solution. Thanks for your input.
Easiest thing to do is get a pair of EGR gaskets and make a block off plate using one of the gaskets as a template. The remove EGR valve and install the gaskets and plate (Plate between the gaskets). Then reinstall the EGR valve, even hook up the vacuum hose. Now it will not (can not) work and the smog police will still see it as properly installed.
Sounds like a plan. Since we don't have smog police in SC yet, I went with the redneck solution. Shoved a few paper towels down the port. Then melted a battery terminal into it with a torch. Once it cured, I tapped it in further with a socket extension. Poured water on top of it and turned the engine to see if any leaks. Seems to have worked out for now. Thanks for the input.
