I have a 97 5.0 explorer and i felt the rearend clunking in corners the other day. so yesterday i went out on the road and gassed it and it just started clunking and didnt move anywhere. i know something in the rearend is shot. Is it the ring and pinion or is it the spiders. Does anyone know. and what is it going to cost me in parts.
Don't know what the cost will be, but if the internals have blown out like it sounds, you'll probably want to change all of the parts. Bits of steel grinding between gears that were good before is not a good thing. Cost will also depend on what type of rear end you have. Do you know what gear ratio and whether its limited slip or open? You may want to check junk yards in your area and find a complete rear end that's in good shape.
How smart can that be?
Something is clunking so you beat on it some more.
Yes now it will cost you even more than it might have.
Depending on what type of rear you have it might cost anywhere from $400 -$600
Its your dime.
But thankfully you didn't hurt yourself or someonelse.

Sounds like you've got the towing package. You can check around at the various parts stores, etc., but as I said before, I'd check around the junk yards. They'll be able to tell you what years will interchange. If you've got 4WD you'll have to go back with 3.73 ratio or change the front differential also. If you've got 2WD, you can go with what ever available ratio you like, but you'll need to recalibrate the speedometer if you go different than 3.73.
