I've been reading the posts and doing my homework over the past year and have started work on my 65 F100. I have the front end and p/s from a 77 f150 for the power brake/steering swap but now am having second thoughts about the motor set up. I bought a rusted out 66 f100 with a partially rebuilt 390 (rings and valve job) and C6 for $200 last spring. It ran OK and probably just needs a carb rebuild-4bb. My mechanic buddy who is a Ford Falcon/Mustang nut is pushing to sell off the 390 & C6 and offered a late 80's 5.0 short block for free that he traded for a few years ago. Or he says to track down a 351 windsor. I'm not going to race this truck and obviously not going for an original restoration. I want a reliable driver. My buddy's sell is cheaper and more available parts for the old Mustang motor. I'd appreciate any and all thoughts. Thanks, OPD.
Keep the FE... the mounts for the small block are different and would need to be sourced plus you will need a small block pattern transmission possibly a C4.
That little pupppy 5.0 needs to work a lot harder to pull iron around. late 80s is a roller motor with a fuel injection cam profile. and would need to be totally reworked for use with a carb.
I agree with garbz...but would you expect any different in this forum?
You can go the SMALL block route and end up with a nice running combo, but it'll take more work than working with the 390/C6 combo. If MPG is what you're looking for neither combination will yeild anything great and they will probably end up close to the same.

Thanks, OPD.
That's because he wants it for a Stang My son still thinks the built 390/C6 we put in the truck would be better suited for my wife's 68 Cougar.... What motor do you have in the 65 now, since I read that is what you are building on.
Welcome aboard!

Sorry I haven't responded but the neighbors sprinkler system froze an exploded into my basement-flooding the computer room. Anyway, I've already pulled and sold the original straight 300 with 4 on the floor about a month ago. That was tough to do because it ran like a watch but I wanted the power and the sound of a V8 for all the time and $$ that will end up going into this truck. The truck is actually being put together for my dad and I wanted the convenience of p/s & p/b and an auto for a better cruiser. I appreciate the input and will likely go with the FE. I'm sure i'll have more ?? as the build continues. Thanks again.
5.0 is just not a truck motor. No torque on the bottom end, and it's built to handle the stresses of a car. Its a short stroke, high revving, cute little lump of motor that belongs in something small and light like a mustang.
the FE is the Ideal truck motor. It drips more testosterone than oil, and does the job in any truck, from 12,000 pound dump trucks, to 3,000 pound Saturday night cruisers.
FE's cost more to build initualy, but once built, they will last for decades before you need to redo anything.
I'm sold, I'll start diverting the cash into the motor rebuild. Thanks again. By the way I have a chance to get a edelbrock 650 4bb carb (cheap) with elec choke. Is that about right for the stock 390? I have a performer 390 edelbrock intake to mount it on.
I believe you will need the engine stands/perches off the 66, so just unbolt the whole thing from the frame and swap it into the 65. Since it has new rings, I would hope the cam was bumped up a notch over stock at the same time. The 650 should work OK, as long as the vacuum secondaries are there to ease in the fuel when needed.
