Ex. When I'm in bumper to bumper traffic and start to move foward say 5-10mph and let off the gas to slow down I have a huge knock (that you feel and hear) in the rear end when it down shifts. This happens only when I'm at these slow speeds. Any advice as to what might be causing this? I've checked the dope in the rear end and it is at the required level.
my 98 expy xlt rumbles for a second when i step on the pedal and rpm downshifts going on the highway 50-60 mph. this doesnt happen to me on the streets. anyway, my check engine light is not on so i havent dont anything but i know for sure that this is not normal.
let me know if you know the answer to this. thanks. im thinking is probably the transmission. when was the last time you did a trans. tuneup?
I have the same problem with the rumble right around 50-60 mph. I notice it is worse if you are accelerating gradually, and better if you punch it. It seems like there's a difference between if you are moving down one or two gears (ie into third vs. second). I guess I just figured it was the tranny going (I do have 230K on the truck), but keep me posted as to what you find out!
By the way, does your shake when going around turns on the highway? Mine does, dealer says the tires are cupping, but can't tell me why.
I can't get it either an don't have access to a slalom course anymore.
As far as the mechanical problems, I'd check universal joints and ball joints. My ball joints were replaced at 86,000.

check the motor mounts, the motor may be lifting due to torque and then thumping when you let off the gas.
