howdy yall! im a new member, but a long time ford owner/fan. my family has owned em and even farmed em for years! anyways, just introducin myself.
on to the question...
what do yall think about the 4.9, 300 inline 6 (i believe its 300...yeah) for offroad use? i know that they are very torquey and the difference in hp from the 302 is very little i believe. im startin a project truck and i was just thinkin about engine possibilities. i figured this might be a good engine because of the torque and it is pretty common to find (also cheap to buy and rebuild). just figured i'd run it by yall...

what kind of oil do u guys run in your rigs...
i recently switched to motorcraft synthetic for my new truck because they can change it at the ford dealership where i bought it cheaper than i can even buy just the oil! 9 dollars!
(moderaters/admin, i know that this part should go in oil/lubrication...but please dont move it there, i just wanted to see what all the offroaders are runnin.. thanks)

the I6 is an awesome offroad mill. although it wont produce the higher ponies numbers that a big block will, it lends itself a lot better to rockcrawling rather than mudding.
first of all the I6 is a fairly light motor compared to the rest ofd the ford line up but can produce impressive torque specs on a dyno.
secondly they are awesome for tight fits! they dont take up nearly as much room as the V series motors and that allows room for more toys under the hood (onboard welder, onboard air, extra hydraulic pumps for fun toys like winches, etc)
for oil, i just use valvoline 10W-40 but then i am not going for exact numbers and since it needs a rebuil di couldn't care less! lol but thats just me

Id go with Cutts that 300 six is maybe the best Ford motor ever made for durability an longevity. Great choice you cant go wrong. Synthetic you cant go wrong there. Good choice. BTW welcome to the site. Youll love it. This offroad forum rocks as well. I dont post much over here but I lurk over here quite a bit. Great people with a lot off experience. Looks like you have the screen name off my favorite TV series Dukes off hazzard. These guys would fit in this forum quite well wouldnt they. Be seein yah on the boards.
I agree too that it a better choice for a off road mill than a 302 because of good smooth low end torque. Also if you want to work on it the 300 can make some impressive power too.
i thought the 300 came in weight wise between the small fords and big blocks??
i like them cause they are cheap...but if your going to spend th emoney to soup one up having done an inline 6...i prefer to start with a big block....more cubes!! my 460 has gobs of bottom end, and a decent top end
but you can find 300-6's for cheap all day long, they will run forever and they arfe fairly efficient
i run shell rotella 15-40 diesel oil in my 460, im about to try the same type but made by coastal next oil change. i like the diesel oil because it is made for severe duty conditions and it seems to hold up better the way i use my truck. 1040 and 1030 always got very thin when wheeling
First, welcome! I personally thing the 300 is great. I initially wanted to swap mine out until I drove it. Check out the I6 forum for buildup info. Col Flashman there has a 300hp/ 400lb torque engine. I am more of a chugging along torque offroader, so it fits perfect. It does great in mud, but not the "over the hood of a truck on 44s" kind. It lugs down to 500 rpm with no problems, but seems kind of maxed out at 3500 rpms. I run regular 10W30. I usually use supertech from walmart as it is cheap. My theory is that frequent changes make up for better oil. Again, welcome.

hahaha, daryls I6 is a joke! and it sounds like ***! he should have built a small block from the get go for what he paid to rebuild that thing
I like the 300 as well. Good motor. I've run 300's, 302's, 390's and 460's in our ranch pickups. The 300 did as well as the others for working. The only issues I had was in trying to pull heavier loads (10-12K), as the particular truck wasn't geared for it. Otherwise they're nice. Runs on gas or LP just fine.
I run 10W30 in it, always have. Currently use petro oil, will switch to Synthetic after rebuild. 10W30 is one of the recommended weights from Ford anyway, if you look in the users manual. I've run it from -40°F to +110°F with no issues.
I would just use the first motor you come across. you can't go wrong with either motor.
I always want to build a 300-6 with 12:1 compress, a 260 duration cam, long tube headers, with a good port & polish job just to see what it is all about.. I bet it would produce almost 400ft/lbs just off idle.
The 300 is a torque producing motor. It will last forever if maintained properly, and can take abuse thanks to it's 7 main bearings. If you want a real worker, then go with a 300 and a T18 or other low speed manual tranny.
If you want to rip through a big old mess of mud, or tear through a 40 acre hay field with 3 feet of snow, the 302 will rev way up, and make nice power up there. Go with an auto, so that the tranny will shift rather than letting the engine lug, and you will move through lots of crap.

actually the question should be what kind of work or play do you do? a mud bogger is setup totally different than a rock crawler or a pre-runner. and what kind of work? do you haul heavy trailer loads of gravel or lumber or do you just drive back and forth to work?
well its gonna be mainly a farm truck, but it will spend lots of time playing in the mud on or after a rainy day! im gonna make a big pit that leads to a creek (sand, water, steep hills...), i plan to make a bit of an obstacle course out of some of the land.
it will see some road time too though. twenty miles to town will make for quite a ride so it should be a tolerable workhorse to drive! hah. but mainly it will be used for doin chores around here and haulin different things. and yes mr. cutts, there will be lots of gravel to haul! im makin some roads/drive ways on the land.
by the way, what kinds of oil filters yall use? the fellers over on the oil/lube board seem to hate fram! ive been usin fram on the wifes car heh! what are yall thoughts on that?

Ive been using Motorcraft filters in my truck. You can get them at autozone cheaper then the dealer. You sound like a fun guy living the life off the Dukes. Good Luck. Be sure to ask any questions about your truck your sure to get an answer.
