make sure the wipers are parked and tighten the passenger wiper arm nut, they usually back off and loosen up like when its snowing and the wiper sticks.
Look at the base of the arm, using a flat bladed screwdriver, carefully pry up the plastic piece covering the base. Inside you will see the nut he is talking about. Gently loosen and retighten this nut. However, tell wifey-poo that forgetting to free the wipers like this again may result in a costly repair. I did the same thing last winter, but it was to be expected, I'm a Florida boy trasplanted to Middle Tennessee and had never seen real ice on a windshield much less enough to make the whole wiper arm stick

And honestly you'd rather not think of the cost ($170.00 plus if I remember) of the wiper motor, much less how difficult and or expensive it would be to have it replaced if your not joe cool the mechanic!

well tightening worked, and that is just simply a bad designe with that conical connection point *Horrible*, anyways, tightening worked, but i can't see that working for very long, all the teeth were worn off on both the motor side and the arm side...
Replacement cost for the motor is 170 from ford and 70 for a reman from Napa...
anyways, thanks again for the help, i saved 70 bucks and about 30 minutes in the freezing cold
The motor side has extremely fine teeth that you can barely catch a fingernail on, and a spanking brand new wiper arm (I bought one a few years ago) has a conical mounting surface that is totally smooth. I think that it's an intentional element of the design, acting as a clutch that allows the wiper to stop trying to move when it's trapped. Beats replacing some expensive parts.
I had a similar problem a few years ago and had a major argument with a Ford service manager over it.Given all the wiper problems on these vehicles including rear window, the wiper system is a poor design and should be much more robust especially on a vehicle equipped with four wheel drive.
Ahhh... that's a good reason, but, you would think that instead of "Breaking" it would have some sort of motor trip like a car window does... that could almost leave a person stranded around here, especially if they dont' know any better.

I Agree fully, they need a way to be robust all around...
