4X4 Hub
On my 94 the hardest parts are removing the locking nut since it requires the wrench and a LOT of torque, something like 250 foot pounds. I spent a week trying with every breaker bar etc I had and couldn't budge it. Impact wrench, took 10 seconds, dang.
One other gotcha at least on my 94... there is a retaining ring that is about the size and shape of a piston ring that sits in a groove on the inside of the hub maybe 1/4 inch in from the rim. It is almost impossible to see due to grease, but you can feel it. You need to get something to pick the end of the ring out of the groove and then the rest is easy. I recall using a machinists scribe. Took me a few days to figure that one out. I am slow.
Yours might have an alignment pin that fits in a hole on the large washer that the locknut fits against. Make sure you mate the pin to a hole, otherwise you will break it and have to figure out how to make one.
Other than that, the hub is a pretty simple piece of gear. Lube the locking hub assembly, very lightly. It does NOT need much grease. Might as well lube the wheel bearings since they will be right there by this point.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson.
Racerguy did an excellent write up on it!
