i recently bought a '79 f-150ranger and i have no blinkers no dash lights and the fuel guage does not work.i am leaning towards a bad ground behind the dash but i am not to confident when it comes to wiring problems so any help would be greatly appreciated.also the instrument panel fuse keeps blowing out.
instrument panel fuse keeps blowing out. [Most likely a hot wire grounding out] Check under the dash and rear of dash panel for starters for bare or hot wires touching ground. Look for previous repairs where wires are taped together, sometimes sloppy work comes apart.
no blinkers. [Do you have tail lights? Brakes and turn signal are on one line and tail lights on another] You need to get a electrical probe tester, [like an ice pick with a wire] It's possible that you may have burned out all of the bulbs but a tester is a must to figure it out.
Good luck

I wouldn't think that a bad ground would cause the fuse to blow. Seems to me that you have a short, (or positive (+) wire grounding out to body metal as PP stated). Look for something like Pony Power has described. Any bare wire should be properly connected (or at least taped) as it may swing or move with vehicular movement etc and short out. Could also be a faulty component with an internal short. More than likely a short from a positive wire.

Dizturbed, Pull out the guage panel and make sure the bulbs are good. While you have it out, look for a light blue wire with a red stripe. This is the wire that goes to accessory type stuff. If you keep blowing fuses....chances are good that wire has a bare place that is grounding out on something metal. Also, do you have an aftermarket stereo in your truck? If so, where is the hot wire with the key on hooked up to and where is the wire that is hot with the key off hooked up to? As far as the turn signals, check all the bulbs, the fuse, and the flasher first.
Doc
i now have blinkers but they work without turning the key on(hot all the time).i replaced the light switch and ignition switch and the fuse still is blowing(still trying to find a bare spot in the blue and red wire that goes for the dash lights).the fuel guage moves when i put a test light in the wiring harness under the hood.bad ground???thanks to all who replied.
