Well i have been doing alot of modifying to my 98 5.4 F-150 lately, and my next step is exhaust. I am going to go with a flowmaster super 40 series with 3" piping. I also have been looking into getting cutouts. My question is, has anyone put cut outs on there F-150 with a 5.4? How does it sound? I know that the smaller engines sorta sound like a boat I was just wondering if the 5.4's do? And also if you have put cutouts on what brand do you recommand? I was looking at the Quick Time Electic Cutouts.
I think Flowmaster has cutouts as well, not sure though. They were used on the Copperhead project on the TRUCKS! show.
Although I do have a question for you now since you brought it up. I have been thinking about going with flowmaster on my 4.6, but you stated above, the smaller engines sound like a boat. Now I do have a boat with a small V8 and I sure don't want my truck sound like that. Do you have any other info on this?
Well i have been told that the Flowmaster Super 40 Series has a real good ton with the F-150's. But im not sure how they would sound on a 4.6. Probably the best thing would be to call a muffler place and ask them how it sounds. Thats what i did, i just asked about all brands of mufflers and he said over all the super 40 series sounds the best and runs the best too. The only reason why i said it sounds like a boat was beacause i had a friend that just cut his exhaust right before the muffler so it sounded like a boat. I am guessing that it will sound real good with a any kind of muffler. Its just what you prefer your truck to sound like.
Billybob69, I had an '01 supercrew with the 4.6, I put the 40 series Flowmaster on cat back, but I kept the factory 2 1/2" piping and it sounded great with a nice deep tone. My '03 supercrew I went with same Flowmaster but went 3" piping cat back. Due to the 4.6 I would try to keep as much low end as possible.
Cutouts are valves that come after the cats. The have a butterfly valve that open up and bypass the muffler, so pretty much just running open header. The cool thing about them is that they are electric and you can open and shut them at your on free will. If you have a V8 it will make your truck/car sound real nasty. So if someone ever reved up on you just flip the switch and your running open header to blow them away. Does that help explain what cutouts are?
