why in the name of henry ford did they have to press on the power steering pump pulley with a 100 ton press! did they think it might spin off? How did they expect your average joe to squeeze in there to remove it. the special puller I borrowed barely fit and there was almost no way to hold the pulley from turning. the nifty bolt supplied with the new kit snapped off in the hole before the pulley was all the way on. luckily it was the head that came off leaving enough shaft to run a nut and some washers on to finish. 5 hours and didn't sovle the problem!
problem was (and still is) steering has become stiff, not undrivable but requiring more effort and has the wife worried. could this be the rack and pinion? ford dealer figured pump was not producing enough pressure. the pump noise also quit making me think it was at fault. steering is still smooth no jerks or thumps. bad fluid maybe?
If it's not a 4wd (as we don't have one and not sure on difference to replace) the rack is actually pretty simple to put in and took me less than 2 hours with my father in law helping (yes he supervised ) We did have to get the front end re-aligned which my brother in law did for cost.
I doubt it's the pump, they work great and the seals go out far faster than the actual pump unless you've run it out of fluid frequently (I've run it quite low a couple of times ) until I put new o'rings in the pressure hose (need a rebuild kit though). Check the belt as well, if it's slipping not turning the pump fast enough that could do it too. I've had our belt slip without sounding like a cat getting run over.
