Ok all here is my problem. I have a 91 aerostar and what happened is the wife was driving it, She leaves the stop light and it goes as ussual but when it switches to second its like it goes to neutral. I went as far as to put a new trany out of a 95 in it. Get it in drive it around the block it drives like a dream park it wait 5mins and test it again and no pull any gear. I replaced the valve body gaskets as well. The thing i noticed though was on the old trany the center shaft that slides in the torque converter was sticking out and could be spun freely. So i check the new one and yup the same thing. so i push it back in and feel it snap in place put it back together and wala it goes again but this time it only backed about 2 inches and same thing no pull any gear. My question is i know chevy has a retaining clip to hold that shaft in but ford doesnt what if anything would be causing that shaft to keep popping out?
any help is greatlly appreciated as the van is all i have to drive.
First, if you don't have a factory manual, go HERE and download it. It will help you alot.
As for the shaft slidding, hhmm, I know there is a bushing there that is suppose to hold it in place, I am wondering if that might be worn out. Also are you sure you got an A4LD and not a 4r44e out of the '95 (that year is a little fuzzy on which tranny is which because of the mid year change.)
As a side note, too little/much tranny fluid causes the A4LD to act weird. You did not mention what the fluid looked like in the original tranny.
I wish I could be more help, but it is hard to see exactly what is wrong without being there.
from what I remember the input shaft is free to be removed, no clip holding it in. the shorter of the splines goes into the trans.
strange question...new torque converter?
could be the input shaft. did you check both ends? any damage/wear on it?
just guessing at this point. any more info you can provide will help.
not trying to hijack the thread but i also am haviong problems with my a4ld i rebuilt it but i lost my book in the process and now i don't know how the input shaft goes which side goes into the trans and which side goes into the tq. can anyone give me a pic.
hi got the same problem in a 93 aerostar AWD. I have limited resources and experience. just wondering if i should tryu to tackle this myself or put out the big bucks in town. what tools do i need to change a torque converter?
o.k so i took the van in to the guy in town and he says that i will need to replace the trans torque converter and all. used tranny costs $900. what are the chances that he will be wrong. i mean if ive got the same problem as nclilbigin is my trans nessesarily pooched?
How many miles did you have on your transmission, and how many miles does the used transmission have? I have always been weary of putting in used stuff because you won't know how well cared for they were, and how long they will last. If you can remove the transmission yourself, it won't cost more than $200 to rebuild it yourself with all new parts. The A4LD is fairly easy to do, and parts are cheap.
