Hey guys I'm looking into swapping my motor. The truck is an 88. It currently has the 302 in it. I run 33 x 12.5s and 4.10 gears. The trans is an e4od that has recently been rebuilt. Anyhow I have a few questions about going to the 351.
First is what mechanical components will I need to change?
Second what electronic components will I need to change?
Are there any inherent downsides to swapping the motor? Long term problems?
What has your experience been?
Right now I'm looking at the Jasper motor and my next stop is looking into the Ford racing crate motors.
first you do not have an e4od tranny. if it has od then it would be the AOD. the e4od is electric and wasnt available in your year. so with that said to do this swap you will need to get a flexplate from an 80's crownvic with 351w/AOD combo. this is very important.
you can reuse your 302 harness, motor mounts, throttlebody and accessory brackets. everything else is motor specific. What i did for my swap was locate a wrecking yard motor that was complete. it had low miles and was in great condition so i just droped it in after replaceing the water pump, oilpump and any gaskets that looked bad. ive had the motor in for over 2yrs now and its been great.
jasper or ford motors would be great. just remember that you will need the correct intake (upper/lower), distributor, oil pan, Y pipe, exhaust manifolds or headers etc... this is a great swap . the new route can be done just requires you to locate a few more parts. also remember that you will need an ecu for a 5.8/C6 combo out of a bronco/f150/f250. no other ecu will work . check out www.fordfuelinjection.com for more info. and feel free to ask away on this one. it was a fun swap
You will also need to change the throttle cable as well. The one for the 351W is longer than the one for the 302. Kemicalburns, as you know I'm planning the same swap and I want to keep the AOD. I've got the Ford Racing Mass air conversion with ECU that I was going to use on the 302 but I shouldn't have any problem using it for the 351W as well should I? It said it was for either (5.0/5.8) engine.
you dont need to change the throttle cable. i didnt have to . just use the same bracket that holds it on your 302 and use it on your 5.8. it will be tight but will work just fine.
now gov that mass air kit WILL work just as it did for your 5.0. just make sure you set it up for the 5.0ho/5.8 firing order and you will be set.
this swap was the best upgrade i have done and am way happy with it. i am currently running 35's on stock gears and it feels peppier then when i had my 302 and 31" tires on stock gears. is that sad or what
Hey Kem do you have any idea about how much this cost you? I'm putting the numbers together now. I was planning on basically a complete rebuild but its looking like I might buy a new truck for as much as I'm going to spend on all this. I have interior and exterior work to do as well as rear end and engine.
i got my complete motor with 80k miles on it. had great compression and 40lbs at idle when warm for $800. I spent total of 1000 for other parts i needed because the motor was out of a 95 f250. because if that i also needed a different distributor, alt, had to buy a different tranny fill tube, newmounts cus mine were shot, waterpump and oilpump figure the motor will last a good 100k more easily with proper care maybe even longer. its now my offroad/hunt rig so that to helps. even finding a motor like this with a few more miles and have a basic rebuild just replaceing bearings and gaskets and your in good shape
Kemicalburns, why couldn't you keep the later style alternator that came with the 95 engine? I've also got a 93 Bronco so I know it's different from my 90 but if you got the complete 95 engine why didn't you stay with the newer style alternator?
the 95 5.8 didnt come with an alt. so what i was saying is my 88 302 alt bolted up differently. the 95 motor used a 3 bolt fixed alt , plus this was a good reason to do the 3G conversion anyway. I beleive i have pics in my superford page of the motor and the swap. once money comes avail i will be looking for a 130 or higher alt at the yard. this 3bolt style was on other fords running higher amps. mine currently is a 95
