Bed bolts

Yesterday, I set an 8-ft Styleside bed on my 71 F-100. It still has the bed-to-frame bolts but no nuts. Does anyone know the size and thread?

If they are the carriage bolts, then they should be 1/2 in course thread.

Grade

The grade on these bolts vary. you can get some at al umber yard, but they are only grade 2 bolts. I contacted a bolt and fastener company and I got grade 5 carriage bolts. I did this because at times I haul as much as a ton or two. Just a consideration for you.

Mike can you help me follow your logic here? The bolts hold the bed down to the chassis, loading 1,000 lbs in the bed will make the bed stick that much more. Why would a bolt upgrade be better for the job?

I don't know how critical the grade of bolt would be for me, but I can see where Mike would want good ones for hauling. I'm thinking of all the ways a loaded bed could be stressed going up grades, braking, etc.

Two reasons why I would go with a higher grade is one being a accident or sudden stop you wont' have to worry about stressing them. And the second reason would that a hardened bolt will not rust as quickly as a lower grade. These lower grade bolts are weak as it is with out the rust. Hope this helps.

LMC sells them at a fairly reasonable price.
