Rear drum removal

Hey guys and gals, I have a little delema going on here tonight. I'm in the process of replacing the rear brake parts including the drums, wheel cylinders, and all the springs and adjusting screw. I have one side complete but I cannot get the drivers' side drum off. I pryed the adjusting screw apart on the other side but this one will not come apart. I gave up trying to turn it. There is a good size groove in the drums that's preventing them from coming off. Anyone have any ideas or tricks in their bags The retaining springs have popped off on both shoes so now they can be pulled out about half an inch but I can't seem to retract them to slide the drum off. Anyone?????

Use one or two small crowbars with some ingenuity.

Hey,

Don't use a crowbar!! You must get behind the plate the whole brake assemble mounts too. The little opening in the bottom is for the brake ajustment. Use some brake spoons or a flat head screw driver to reverse the ajustment wheel and then your drum will come off.

soak the screws that the tire bolts on in WD40 or another penatrating oil, then hit the drum with a hammer to loosen it up. works for me

I finally got it off. Thanks guys. In doing so I noticed something that has confirmed my suspisions about the rear end being "monkeyed" with. When I pulled the drum off I saw, in bright yellow paint, "89 F150" written on the axle shaft. Apparently the driver's side axle shaft has been replaced in the past. I thought it pretty interesting myself. But anyhow...I got the new hardware on and I just have to adjust the shoes and bleed the lines tomorrow. She ought to stop on a dime...well...maybe a quater now.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Mar-02 AT 01:03 AM (EST)]LOL...sorry Dennis. I took a claw hammer and pulled on the drum while my father took another hammer and chisle and bent the adjusting screw and then the drum just popped off. Good thing too because my next option was going to be getting a cutting torch and cut the drum in half. The retaining springs for the shoes had come off so it was a little tricky seems as how the shoes wanted to go with the drum. But everything is replaced now
