The DW (Darling Wife) and I went camping this past weekend just to get away. While there (Myrtle Beach SC) I started talking to a fellow from up north and he was telling me since he installed a Brute Force air induction system on his 05 F 250 PSD he gained almost 2.5 miles to the gallon. Does this sound right? Is FMC choking these engines that much because of the EPA?
I am surprised with those numbers. Most Cold Air Intakes are only good for 2 MPG tops. I have even heard that some are decreasing the MPG numbers. It is all in the right foot regulator.
There have been many occurances of the filter lube coating the intake sensors. Any slight gain in MPG, (& 2.5mpg is a stretch. Probably telling his wife that to justfy the $400 he spent.), would be negated by the hastle of going to the service department. Zoodad mod, and exhaust are a better bang for the buck. Zoodad is free. And there's not much that beats the Donaldson for combined efficiency for filtering and flow.
The cold air intakes, (and that's a stretch since none of them that I've seen aquire air from outside the engine compartment...), provide power gains well above the torque peak. These are diesels, not high rpm small block Windsors. Ok, with Zoodad and Exhaust, And wart disconnected, I'm managing 18mpg average with a best of 21mpg, (empty bed, no canopy, tailgate up), on the freeway. Not too bad for a 4x4. That for my 04'. What I suspect is that his mileage for the 05' may be at a point where many of us experienced a bit of power increase and fuel consumption reduction as the engine breaks in. Timing of the new intake install may be a coinsidence. Somewhere's between 10-20,000 miles.
