Finally got around to replacing the modulator on my 90 3.0L, it had been getting worse recently (more pinging) and I'd been using up a quart of AT fluid every six weeks or so.
New one seemed to work on initial test drive of 5 miles, pinging was gone. Noticed that vacuum hose going from the tee on the engine to the steel line leading to the modulator was soft and loose so I replaced it also added 1 QT AT fluid because it was low (just on the end of the dip stick).
On second test drive disaster struck! Lots of pinging and white-gray smoke coming out the tailpipe. Pulled the vacuum line and plugged it, smoke cleared up and pinging went away.
So do I have a defective modulator ? masked during the first test drive by the bad vacuum hose ? Or is there something else going on with this tranny? Going to pickup another modulator and try again next weekend.
it is possible to get a defective one. with the new one, test the mod with a vacuum pump before installing. that way you know. just pull a vacuum and see if any bleeds off. only need about 10-15 in/hg.
Did you change the oil and filter after the modulator replacement?
Its not a good idea to leave the tranny fluid in there with the oil. If the vacuum hose coming to the old modulator had tranny fluid in it you can bet you have tranny fluid in the oil pan.
