Hello, This is my first post, been reading here silently for a while, great forum!! Have had my 99 PSD SD Lariat crew for 6 months love it , has a buck 25 on it and runs very strong with the predator and Ats 4 inch turbo back, gauges and Kwik. tho no trans gauge yet.
My question is when i`m running with or without a load and have overdrive activated she seems to shift crisply with the predator set to firm thru 1,2,3 and when it hits OD she seems to chug for 2 or 3 seconds with rpms jumping up and down before locking in. I usually feel Tc lock up before or after this happens so i have isolated it to OD seems too long to shift am I building too much heat? Would tricumulator mod affect OD?. Should I do a flush with syn fliud? TC has been changed once.Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Thank for any help,My bosses 03 shifts smooth as silk, mine seems to try and hit OD too soon.
Hello cnd999, welcome to FTE. why didnt you join earlier?

yes, this is one thing i hate about these transmissions. they LOVE overdrive, and they will get there as soon as possible, and stay there as soon as possible. i hope an aftermarket valve body will correct this problem. holding 3rd gear for another 5-8 seconds would be great.
Thanks, this has been a really helpful forum for new PSD owners as well as all you seasned vets, I did almost join a few times but balked when most of my questions were answered by looking through mountains of posts so I didn`t get yelled at.
so if i do the Sonnax mod to my tranny next fluid change it will allow my 3rd to hold longer resulting in hopefully a crisper od shift? Does my Torque converter have a drain plug in the stock form? And does this wallowing before overdrive kicks in spell trouble for my trans or is this an average type complaint for these trannys?
no, the only thing the sonnax valve and tricumulator springs do is firm up the shifts, it makes them more crisp, precise and the shifts dont "wander" as they some times could with a stock modulator valve. the sonnax valve is machined with tighter clearances, so it makes the shifts precise, and it wont make an unexpected shift, always predictable. it won't alter shift points though.
it raises line pressure also, so it makes the torque converter "harder". the stock torque converter is surprisingly soft, and it only gets better when you add power. the sonnax helps this.
With a '99, yes, you should have a drain plug for the torque converter.
You have my respect already, having used the search function to answer most of your own questions instead of just asking away for answers that are here daily for anyone to read. Kudos to you!
This is a fine bunch of owners that like to keep their equipment maintained. Collectively, we likely have more knowledge than all the schools to which Ford sends their techs.
It's amazing how some here surprise their dealer's service writers when it comes to a problem. We're not "snowed" easily, and it's gotta' be frustrating to those guys. Stick around, and when you absolutely HAVE to visit the dealership, you'll have more troubleshooting skills behind you than the service technicians.
After you've been around a while, and if you find the knowledge really useful, consider becoming a "supporter". It helps to buy the bandwidth, and it's a great investment at around $15 a year.
It's like a library card at a frat house with a heckuva' bunch of great "brothers".

What`s been amazing to me is most every machanic I have talked to in my area about my truck has seemed kindof dense about the mods and maintainance of the PSD. The knowlege I have gained from reading posts on FTE will serve to further the life of my truck that is used to sustain my livelyhood that is a big part of supporting my family and for that I am greatful, Dan
if you really appreciate the site, maybe you should consider becoming a supporter. the small $15 fee per year is basically nothing, it is the best $15 you can put into your truck. i can guarantee i still would have a stock truck (or a poorly-modified one) without the helpful folks around here. the fee has paid for itself hundreds of times over, (literally), and i encourage everyone to become a member. it helps Ken, the owner, buy bandwidth, to keep this awesome site running.
Nice work, 999. the "Supporter" is a badge of honor around here. Shows you care that it goes on, by helping to buy a little chunk of bandwidth, which I'm sure isn't cheap.
I'm sure we're going to like having you around here. But I'd like you even if you didn't directly support the site, 'cause you at least tried to find your own answers first. You didn't appear helpless, just information-less. That will be changed. Stick around, it's a fun ride with LOTS of "bennies".
In response to the original question, my truck clugs or bucks slightly (whatever you want to call it) when I have the cruise control set and go down a hill. It only does it when the cruise is set when the tranny "coasts". Is this normal for a 4r100?

The valve body doesn't determine when the transmission will shift. The computer does that. There is nothing you can do to the valve body to make it hold 3rd gear longer.
