my navigator 2003 has a slightly rough idle. Enough so that it can be felt from the inside as a slight shaking of the vehicle. Dealer can't find anything wrong and no codes are showing. Anyone else had this and fixed it?
My 03 Expy has the same shake. Its as if its stumbling slightly. The dealer reprogramed with no luck and said others do the same. As near as I can tell from others in here and their vehicles...its the Idle air control valve. Its not that big of a deal to me so I havent messed with it. There is a good article on cleaning the IAC..(get to know this acronym) ..search the site.Keith
it is really annoying, no codes, dealer states that there is nothing wrong but there is clearly a noticible shake at idle, sort of like you get with a 4 cylinder car
Got to agree with Navi it does feel like a 4 banger. I probably could get the dealer to do the IAC but will wait a bit. I took it in (03 Expy) to get the faded door cladding looked at and with the information I had in hand from this forum ,TSB number,it was taken care of in no time.
It's not necessarily the IAC valve. These two engines (4.6L and 5.4L) have been known to have rough idles since their introduction 10 years ago. I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of similar posts on several forums in the five years I've owned my 5.4L Expy. Some days mine purrs like a kitten and other days it burps like my 2 year old. What I've found helps more than anything is to keep the whole air intake system really clean, from the filter all the way back to the TB and beyond.
I had the same rough idle issue with my 2001 expedition. I took in and they replaced the spark plugs and tested the coil pack on the cylinder that was missing. It tested OK. The tech drove it and still had the problem. He went ahead and replaced the coil pack and that solved the problem.
