I have an opportunity to buy a 1994 ford ranger XLT Super Cab 4x4 with the 3.0 and 5spd w/95,000 miles for $2950. It seems to be in good shape. What are some common things that go wrong with theese trucks? Is the 3.0 good on power, and Is $2950 a good deal or not? Any help is greatly appreciated.
The 3.0L is a little laggish on power. More than the 4 banger, but nowhere near the 4.0L. Often refered to as the 3.slow. It'll get you there though. You could probably talk the seller a little lower, but if it's in good shape that doesn't sound too bad.
The tranny needs a good looking over. The plugs on top(/) are cheap rubber and rot, causing major-league fuild leakage. Not good.
I wish I could tell you what goes wrong, but my 2.3L SCab 94 model hasn't been worrisome at all! Wear items, t-stat, serpentine belt, oil changes, temp sending unit, radius arm bushing (need to do....eventually), and probably the serp belt tensioner needs to be done. Great ride otherwise.
Good things about the 94 models: The last year you can pull codes with the paperclip or just a needle multimeter....and the heater core doesn't require the whole dash to be pulled!
The 3.slow is reliable, but sluggish as noted, and unlike the 2.3 and 4.0, it still has a distributor until 95 came around. Not a huge deal for most, but coil packs and 8 plugs spoiled me. Maybe my 3.4L Camaro is a blessing in disguise, rather than an LT1 with the distributor under the water pump....either way, the Ranger (253K miles and counting) will get some rest soon.
Thanks for all of your input! I wasn't really expecting it to be a power wagon anyway. Just something fairly nice to get places with a little less fuel counsumpsion than the old 460. I really hate 7 MPG, I was kind of hoping I could get 20 in this one. Given the pretty good condition that it is in I guess that is a good deal. It does have a few extras like the bedliner so I think We might consider it.
Consider it definetly. Check that tranny out for those plugs, totally forgot that (stupid since I've done it before...).
20 is a little on the optimistic side, but expect high teens on gentle highway driving.
