Sparkplugs?

01 XLT with 70+k miles...seems to be dropping off in MPG...new plugs needed yet?....lots of traffic miles vs. less h-way miles. I know I need platinum tips..any suggestions? Also, I can't even see the damn plugs at a glance inspection, on a P.I.T.A. scale of 1 - 10, how bad is it? (I'm an experience shade-tree mechanic with all the right tools....)

I changed my 02 V6 at 75k highway miles and they were still in good shape (I own an 05 I4 now). You know you've got a COP system so the plugs are buried underneath. The front three aren't bad. You will have to pull the intake manifold to reach the back three and I highly suggest you buy a gasket kit (rubber intake gaskets) for less than $10 since the intake gaskets lose shape over time. A $10 Chilton/Haynes manual will come in handy but if not, you can figure out the 6 or 7 items that have to be removed from the intake in order take remove it. It will take about 2 hours not rushing anything. Your choice on plugs but I didn't notice any difference when I went to NGKs. Also, Ford puts the plugs in dry so get a small tube of anti-seize lube for the plugs.

A scale of 1-10 I'd say about a 5. It's not hard, no tight spaces, you just have to spend the time to remove the intake manifold.
