Dear Nascar fans, I don’t get it.

I have many friends who are into Nascar. They are fanatical about the sport and follow it religiously. What baffles me however, is that almost all Nascar fans appear to identify themselves with one specific Driver. One of my buddies worships Dale Jarret, while another worships Mark Martin. Why is this, and how does this happen?

When a person decides to become a Nascar fan, does somebody appoint you a Driver? Do you send away in the mail for one??? It’s not so much that Nascar fans just like the guy, but they seem to dang near worship him! They know every possible life statistic about him. They wear clothing that blazons his name. They collect memorabilia and decorate their truck with stickers proclaiming their support. They debate one another on who is the better strategist, and discuss Driver personality traits on and off the track. It’s as if they know the guy personally, or are somehow related to him. I have asked my buddies this question, however I have yet to hear a logical answer (mostly just blank stares). So, I’m puttin’ out here, cuz…

Nascar fans, I don’t get it. Please enlighten me.

Well, some fans are like that...but I know alot of NASCAR fans who are SPONSOR/ BRAND specific. For instance, HOME DEPOT sponsers Tony Stewart, so since I spend most of my money there, buying things to fix or repair my house, I cheer for him! Some fans will support only FORD drivers and others only CHEVY etc...so it varies.

I'm a huge NASCAR fan, and I tend to follow Ricky Rudd the most. But -- there are many others that I like. Especially when you go to a race, it's far more exciting to follow a number of drivers than 1, especially if your guy is sucking it up (which wasn't very hard for the 21 the past couple of years). How people just follow one I don't get it. For example, it's hillarious when I'll see a Jr. fan get up and cheer when the 8 will pass Morgan Shepard who was 8 laps down (no lie, happened at Martinsville in the fall of 2004). Follow the dang race!

Really don't care that "You don't get it"...........you need to look in the mirror before knocking someone else's passion!!!

The fact that I took a 3rd mortgage on my house to aquire Mark Martin's pair of skivvies after his last crash (unwashed I might add) shouldn't bother you.

I also buy Viagra by the case because Mark says so.

We are currently negotiating with Roush Racing and Mark to see if he'll hook up with the misses so that I may bring up our love child.....just a few more "small" details to work out.

So, Mr. Rocket Science.........just because you live in that God forsaken hell hole that's known as Washington doesn't give you Carte' Blanche to look down your rain dripped nose at us good ol boys!!!

Good day, SIR!!!

I go by the rule: "If they're in a Ford, then I'm for 'em". For example, I was for Kurt Busch since day 1. Now that he's gone over to the dark side, he's dead to me.

Yes, knowing DOHC's previous posts, I am sure it is...

As for me, I love all forms of motorsport, and I never "got" Nascar either...

Yeah, he was joking.

But it's a good thing DOHC and I are friends, otherwise I'd hop in my 300-6 equipped Ford pick-up (towing 10,000 lbs. and getting 30mpg I might add), drive down to LV, and "Carte' Blanche" his own skivvies!!!

Now that IS funny.
I would jump in my diesel powered plane, and join you, and assault him with some rod ratios on Chevy small blocks

If they're Pro, NONE.

Funny you brought it up, as that's another one "I don't get".

How about golf? You beat on a little white ball all over a pasture and if you could succeed in killing it, you still can't eat it.

Personally I take an interest in no driver, team, brand, or whatever in particular. It's the NASCAR culture that I like. In this politrically correct world obsessed with promoting every special interest group and denigrating "us", it's the TV equivalent of these groups' cultural associations. A few hours spent with my own kind with noone to apologize to for not having been born gay or a minority or a woman.

I recall John Wayne liked to wear a t-shirt that said (something like) "Straight, conservative, Chrstian, male. Any questions?" Liked John Wayne as much as NASCAR.
