I did a search on this, first thing, and found nothing relating to my problem.
I just bought an 89' F-150 from a good friend of mine. The problem is the tranny dosen't want to shift out of second gear. This truck used to be a manual, and now has an automatic. I am not sure what type it is. I do know that the front end was hit pretty hard, and cracked the front grille. This also knocked the transmission cooler out of place, and it is hanging by the lines right now. My thought is maybe this caused a leak somewhere and caused the transmission to loose pressure. May also have caused it too overheat and that might have damaged something, causing it too not shift out of second. Those are my thoughts. Without knowing any more than the fact it is an automatic, I have no idea what it really could be, and I know it will be harder for you guys to diagnose this, without knowing exactly what type it is. I will know what it is this evening b/c I am going out too put on a new belt. Thanks for your help.
I'm sure there are a ton more reasons the transmission may not be shifting like it should, I just posted what I thought it might be. Also, a local transmission shop quoted me for $795 dollars to rebuild it, if it were the AOD, and up into the thousands if it was any of the other automatics that came with the F-150 up ti'll 97'. Does this sound right to you guys? Seems a little high for me. There is a good car yard here, and they want $175 for an automatic. Thanks again.
I'm not sure why no one has answered. If this has been covered here before, I could find nothing in all the searching I did. I do alot of posting and know how it is best too search for your answer before you go posting a new topic. If I posted something that has been covered here already then I apologize, but once again, I found nothing in my searches that would help me.
Ok guys, I apologize for all that. After doing about 5 more searches using different combo's of "AOD" "No shift", among other terms I finally found what I needed. It seems like it is something simple; the TV cable needs adjusting. However, this truck was driven an unknown number of miles by my friend who sold it too me, and whoever he bought it from. He was the one who told me about it not shifting into 3rd or 4th. I found numerous diagrams on how to re-adjust the TV cable properly, and I will give it a try, but there's no way of knowing the damage done too the direct drive clutch for 3rd and 4th. I found several Bronco's, F150's, and E150's that have the transmission I need. The wrecker is asking $175 for each. I of course have no way of knowing wether they are good or bad when I pull them, so I am taking a risk. Better than spending $795 for rebuild.
Alright, I see what you mean. Getting the TV adjusted properly is the first thing to do, and make sure I have 3rd and 4th, but something tells me that after my friend drove it and it would not shift out of second, not even try too, the clutch is fried. Waiting another 6 weeks before I can afford the rebuild is worth it. I wasn't planning on getting any from a yard, unless this one couldn't be rebuilt. I guess I just wasn't thinking right at the time I said that.
