I have a 1995 Ford F150 4x4 300 straight 6. It started missing at higher speeds when you press on the accelerator. Usally around 50 mph. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Set the timing. All that appears ok. It seems like it gets worse the longer it runs as it warms up. The truck idles ok and runs ok if you barely crack the accelerator, but as soon as you try to pick up speed it stars vibrating and missing very bad. Someone told me to check the mass air sensor, does that sound right? Any help would be appreciated!!
My 1995 Straight Six doesn't have mass air, and I've never seen a 1995 Six that does. If it was a California truck I'd give it the benefit of the doubt, but since you're in Ohio, the truck is probably a regular old Speed Density model with no mass air sensor. There's only one way to find out for sure.......
I just checked it, your right it doesn't have the mass air but a map sensor which seems odd for a 1995 to me but ok. I checked the codes and it says it says the ACT sensor is bad. I unhooked the sensor from the intake and tried to run it but it didn't seem to make a difference in performance. I know I have to replace it but I'm not sure if this could cause my problems. I thought if it went bad I'd get a check engine light, or the computer would bypass it if unhooked. Any ideas?
You're good - The map sensor is what they have if they dont have mass-air. Can't really offer you any specific advice - except that I checked the price of an ACT sensor at Advance Auto Parts. Only about $15 bucks, worth a shot to see if it cures or at least narrows down your problem. Keep us updated.
If I were you I would first start with the ignition coil. It is very cheap (like 15.00). My 88 ford f150 300 i-6 did the EXACT same thing. Here the ignition coil was going bad.
