I am looking to pull a 7x16x7 Dump Trailer (New Orleans clean up). I found a 02 F250 SD with a 6.8, 4x4, automatic with 3:73. The trailer will be a Gooseneck. And I have a couple of questions.
1. The Dealer say's it has" Payload package #1", what is that?
2. Is the 3:73 to fast for the towing? (the debris shouldn't be too heavy)
3. How do these Automatics hold up? ( hard time finding a standard)
As far as I can see in the 2002 order book, all pickups of that year had payload package #1. The payload depends on what wheelbase, 2WD or 4WD, tires/wheel combo, springs, and engine type is installed:
"Gross Axle Weight Rating is determined by the rated capacity of the minimum component of the axle system (axle, computer selected
springs, wheels, tires) of a specific vehicle."
Unlike 49-states trucks, California vehicles also have restrictions on payload according to engine and transmission type. This is especially applicable to chassis-cabs, not so much on pickups or box-delete trucks.
The only trucks that came with a choice of payload pkg 1 or 2 where some of the chassis-cabs and the F53 motorhome chassis which came with payload pkg 1,2 and 3.
If your going to pull that trailer, get a truck with 4:30 gears,,I have a 7 x 12 Bri-Mar dump trailer, plus other trailers, my V-10 with the 4:30's does great, but I have the 6-speed man. tran too.
There should be a towing capacity list in the owners manual. Go to dealership and pull the owners manual and take a look at the capacity. then go from there. It should be listed by specific vehicle ( engine, W.B. or body type, rear axle). You will have to guess how much weight the trailer weighs empty or have it weighed and how much load you will have (Max).
