This is normal operation. You can shut it off manually, but it isn't necessary.

I find it annoying that the A/C comes on automatically like that. It particularly annoys me that on the manual system, the defroster and defroster/floor setting also calls the A/C into action, even if the dash light isn't illuminated. I can hear the compressor go on. Just kind of silly to drive around in the winter with the A/C running in the background.

A/C dehumidifies the air, thus making the defroster more effective.

True, but won't you lose the same amount of gas or even more when you have to idle twice as long waiting for the window to defog?

Just trust that Ford knows what they're doing and move on. Change can be good sometimes.

I know how it works, just don't know why they couldn't give you the option to disable the A/C after the defroster has done it's job. It gets a little too toasty with the panel/floor vents selected, in order to keep the A/C from chewing gas unnecessarily, say on a chilly but dry 40 degree day. Even without the A/C light on, the compressor is active, you can hear it.

well look at it like this the a/c pump consumes about 6 hp at its most. you lose more in parasitic loss than the a/c pump uses. so i would not worry and the a/c pump is pretty quiet.
