O.K.---I'm going to try to quote from memory---the non turbo 6.9 diesel came out around 83 or so-----and from 83 to 93 ford increased the displacement to 7.3 ------Ford started selling a turbo diesel that had an after market turbo during the 94 model year---this was NOT the Powerstroke Diesel-----The Powerstroke diesel appeared at the END of the 94 model year---The BIG difference between the pre-powerstroke and the Powerstroke diesel was that the Powerstroke diesel had NO Injector pump with the 8 individual fuel tubes running to each combustion chamber---Instead the pathways for fuel delivery were cast into the Heads and controlled by a computer----the hydraulic force necessary to supply fuel for the engine was supplied by a mechanically driven pump that utilized the engine oil for that purpose----that is why it was So important to change your oil every 3,000 miles or so or you would notice a discernable degredation of engine performance----and that is why Currently it is still important to keep the oil changed on a regular interval for the diesel engine in the Superduty's that came out in 1999---All historical corrections to the above will be appreciated--this is a subjective recollection at best and as such may contain errors--although not intentional , Just alittle alzheimers , maybe , fd :-X11
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jan-02 AT 10:18 PM (EST)]the old smokers were built buy International, who now makes Power Strokes, so that could be the cause for the confusion.
Fatdaddy, your recollection is very close to mine. I don't believe there were ANY F series light duty(250-350) trucks in the 70's with diesels, much less a PSD.
6.9 came out in 83-87
89 brought 7.3
95 brought Powerstroke..they are electronic motors..thats the difference
and Navistar builts the diesels by the way.
>Ken, I don't think there were 250-350 diesels then.
Ford has offered their own (330 cid) and other engine maker's (International, Cummins) diesels in the F-series since the 60s, possibly further back....
Want a scan of the engine table of contents from a Ford shop manual or will my word suffice? :-)

I absolutely agree on F series. Just not F250-350.(light duty)
If you have something showing a diesel in a 250 prior to '83, I'd be interested.
