Pardon me if this has been asked before, but there are so many headlight posts, that I'm going batty trying to get to them all and I'm new to the forum.
I have a 2000 Excursion Limited, 120K miles. There are a couple of problems with it, like the door lock actuators, rotors going out prematurely, but the one that's most critical right now is the headlights won't come on.
The right lamp was dim for some time but we know that's a loose wire on connector to the bulb. It hasn't been replaced, yet, but now when the switch is turned on, the running lights and the hi-beam indicator come on, but the headlights don't.
Karen - You seem to have a couple problems that would be best addressed by a competent mechanic in your area. The desciption you've given doesn't sound like a common ailment of the X ... doesn't sound like the "typical" problems we've read about here. Sorry this provides no answer for you.
birkelbk, rotors being warped are a normal problem. front rotors and pads, rear rotors and pads and a set of emergency brake pads are about $700 list price just for the parts. as far as the headlights, it sounds like the headlight socket may have melted and the low and high beam wires may be touching. remove the socket and see if it is melted. if you cant do the work yourself, you should get it done soon to prevent the wiring harness from further melting. I have an 01 X limited 4x4 v10 only 65000 miles, but no daytime running lights. I changed my headlights to HID's, but thats another story.
Thanks to everyone for someplace to start looking. The weird part is that the headlights started working on their on Sunday morning. Poltergeists, perhaps?

Doubt it's a ghost. More likely a short. Get this fixed ASAP!!! There was another post on here about a super duty having a headlight "posessed" and it ended up catching on fire as his wift drove in to the driveway.
If the ground is lost in one of the bulbs the power will go through both filiments, through the high-beam wire to the other headlight , through the other filiment to ground.
First fix your known problem then figure out if you have to do more. The other thing might be if you were pulling the ground like this the ground wire on the other side was not designed to carry the power for both lights and may have burned it or one of it's connectors.
