the rubber on my motor mounts has turned into a soild substance. now the engine has a lot of free movement in there.

motor mounts question

The "rubber things" are the dampeners on the motor mounts. They absorb vibration from the motor, so your truck doesn't shake to pieces. When you purchase new mounts, the rubber and metal part of the mount come together in one piece. Obviously yours is broken because you said they seperated and the motor moves. They are pretty cheap and easy to replace. I'd recommend replacing both if one is bad. But if you insist on only changing one, be sure to specify which side of the motor when purchasing. To replace the mount:

1. Get a floor jack with a piece of wood on the jacking plate, and jack up until the wood on top of the jack touches the oil pan.
2. Remove the motor mount bolts from the mount (Only do one side of the motor at a time)
3. Now, lift up on the oil pan slowly with the jack/wood until the motor lifts up enough to remove the mount.
4. Slide the new mount in and try to start the bolts threads, then lower the jack to let the motor sit properly and tighten the bolts completely.
5. I recommend looking up the specs on how tight the bolts need to be, to see how many ft-lbs to tighten it to

motor mounts question

Vampiro, pay special attention to the replacement mounts (if you decide to replace them). There are two different sets (2 different pass & 2 different drvr side) for the earlier 300's. I ran into this myself ('79). Do a cerefull visual inspection for part matching before doing the R & R...

Wise words my friend!
I was helping a buddy a long time ago on his Chevelle. His, not mine. After two different trips to parts house we removed the bad mount, and supported the engine with blocks of wood, and took the mount into the parts house to compare. Turns out the part BOOK(b4 computers) was wrong. To finish my rambling, upon our return, we found the engine had fallen off the blocks. Lucky for him, not much damage.

A mistake is most costly when one does not learn from it.
