This is a first for me,1991 Explorer XLT, I'm Getting water hammer in the cooling system.
If the engine is cold and I run 2 or 3 miles and then shut it down I get a recurring thump from the heater area under the dash if I restart the engine it stops, if the temp is right up it doesn't do it and now my rad is weeping about a pint of coolant a day around the tank edge (fill side)
Just a wild guess - you might have a head gasket leak, just enough to get combustion gasses in the cooling system, building up pressure...... Try taking the radiator cap off when cold, start it, and watch for bubbles in the fluid. Let it warm to operating temp.
Thanks but I've redone the heads had them checked (magnafluxed and pressure tested) and put new headgaskets in myself (so I know they are right) I didn't have a problem till I replaced the rad. And it hasn't gotten anywhere near overheated since I've done the headwork.
Headwork done a year ago, Rad replaced 2months ago.
Bleed the system. Put it up on blocks and leave the cap off, cycle the heater while doing doing so. Sounds like the only thing you haven't replace is the water pump.
