I have to replace the intake gasket on my 302 and thought I would give the manifold a spruce up while I had it off. Need recommendations on a good high heat paint (Ford blue matching of course) that would last. Is there a primerless paint for example?. I thought of those NAPA spray bombs but it is not clear if they would stand up well to the heat
I just repainted my oil pan, air filter, and valve covers with plasti-cote high temp engine enamal. It says it "resist heat up to 500 deg" and I haven't had a problem with it yet. It comes in all the standard automotive colors (Ford Blue, Old Ford Blue, GM orange, etc...). It's also supposed to stand up well to automotive fluids/oils. It was only a few bucks a can and I believe you get what you pay for. So some of the pro paint guys here may have a better solution.
The key would be to get the part really clean. Sand blast lightly if possible or at least scrub with stiff brush and good cleaner. The spray bombs work pretty good actually. Krylon or Plasticoat. That what my machine shop uses for all it's engines.
POR-15 also makes a nice engine enamel that they guarantee will not burn off. I'm just painting up a water pump and heads now but if it works as well as their paint I used on my frame then it should be great.
The 500 degree spray bomb stuff will burn off around the exaust area of the heads, but otherwise will do what it is supposed to. The POR is more expensive, but the next motor I do, I will pony up the $$$ for it.
