hpop reservior

I have a 2002 F350 and the hpop reservior drains down and then it won't start. I have tried to find all the info on this site I can, I still don't know where to start. The Ford dealer said they would have to pull the engine to repair the problem and I really don't think that is true.

I have seen the post here about check valves by the reservior and near the oil filter and also about the high pressure oil pump being bad.

Is there a way I can find and repair the draining down without just changing
stuff in the dark until something corrects the problem?

Thanks for your help,
Charlie

During initial start-up and when the engne is cold the HPOP is fed unfiltered oil from the left side lifter oil gallery through an anti-drainback checkvalve. You can see the cap for the checkvalve if you look right beside/below the HPOP at the front of the block.....between the pump and the head.

It looks to be a tight squeeze to access the valve with the HPOP in place, but the engine doesn't have to come out.

Where does it get oil from when its hot? I have a similiar prob when mine is hot I cant build over 200 psi ICP and it takes 15-20 seconds of cranking to see engine oil pressure. I just replaced injectors, so I m thinking its something with that. Sorry to Hi-Jack

If an oring was cut on the injector install or a old copper seat washer was left in, or injectors not tight. Have seen all of these cause your problem. Also had one because of cheep reman injector.

It goes through the filter and the cooler before it gets to the HPOP reservoir when it's warmed up.

I changed the anti-drainback check valve and spring today. The one on top of the block behind the hpop reservior. Still have the same problem. If I start the truck hot or cold without reving the engine, it will just idle for a few seconds until the oil in the heads is gone and it will die. At that point I have to refill the hpop reservoir to restart. Is there anything else that could cause this problem?

Thanks,
Charlie

Sounds like the primary oil pump is not supplying oil fast enough to keep up. Let the truck set over night and check the hpop level before you crank it. If it is within an inch of the top and you still have a problem you need to start checking elsewhere.

I agree. Very few other possibilities unless the reservoir feeds have become plugged. Can't imagine that happening.

Didn't you state that you just replaced the injectors Charlie?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but once the hpop is filled the check valve keeps the oil from draining back into the engine. If it is doing the same thing with both the old and new valves, it seems to me the oil is probably draining on the injector side.

I just replaced the injectors this pass weekend and figured I would replace the check valve while I had it apart. I have 452,000 miles on it and the reservoir has been draining down since about 180,000. First time it happened, I had it towed to the dealer and they replaced the IPR valve, charged me around $300.00 and said it was fixed. A week later it did the same thing and that is when I found this site and learned about the dry reservoir problem. Like I said before, if I rev it up as soon as it starts a little bit, I usually don't have a problem, But I am thinking about selling it and would like for it to be right before I let it go.

Thanks,
Charlie

Have you checked the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge? With that many miles the engine may just be worn out.

That's accurate, but as I understand it the problem is the reservoir is draining while the engine is running. That means the low pressure pump is not filling it fast enough. It should be able to keep up with an injector leak easily.

The good news is the pump is mounted to the crankshaft snout and the engine does not have to be removed to replace it.

I just had this same prob after installing rebuilt injectors. It would start cold, but once it was warm it would not build enough ICP pressure to fire again. Mine was a bad injector, that was just pouring oil out the exhaust. It would be worth it to remove the VC's and run it and wee what it looks like.
