Ok, today the 2001 F-250 with the 7.3 sputtered like it was out of fuel then the engine light came on, it kept running good after the sputtering and then a while later it did it again and died, it took about 2 minutes to get it going again. We were doing 70 to 80 mph on the interstate if it maters. Also I was told all the filters were changed and what ever other little things on a diesel you can do, I dont know to much about diesels so Ill take any help I can get. Thanks
sounds to me like your Camshaft Position Sensor is bad. This is a common problem among 7.3's. go to your IH dealer, pick up a CMP or CPS, for a T444E. (the model of the powerstroke). should run about $100. do not go to the dealer, they want twice as much. if you can wait a while, you can pick one off of ebay for about $60. good luck.
It's most likely the cam sensor but have the codes checked to be sure. I always tell customers would you take a high blood pressure med. with out knowing you have high blood pressure?
Its been doing it for 2 or 3 months, the boss just said drive it till it dies. This wont cause any other problems will it? And whats a IH dealer? Thanks for help tho, Ill look into that.
Yeah and you get to sit in the truck until the tow truck arrives???
Tell him that for half the price of the tow home he can go to the International dealer and get a CMP sensor for a 2001 T444E. They wanted $98.00 for mine when I bought it last year. Exact same engine as the one in your truck. The sensor will come in a bag with a Ford emblem on it. One bolt holds it in next to the flywheel pulley at about the 10:00 position.
2 or 3 months is a long time for a CMP to last once it starts to fail, but I still agree it is probably that. Goto Powerstrokeshop.com and enter either CPM or CPS, (same thing) and you will see the picture of the device. Easy to replace.
Well iceman, so did mine. Sometimes it will fail and leave you dead in the water and other times who knows. The CPM is a common problem with the PSD. Many will recommend, myself included, to purchase 2. One to replace the bad with and the other to keep in the glove box for when ever.
I see in your footing that you have an early '99. We do as well, what kind of boost do you make? Seems to me I heard the early '99's had better turbos and made more boost. We have a full 5", Predator, 6637 intake, and sport-comp gauges. It'll hit 30+ on the 100 horse mode.

All I have is a pyro, trans gauge and a happy face in the left over pod hole. The Edge EZ is only good for about 60 HP. If you are getting 30+, I would say you are really cranking, NICE!!!. I guess I need to get me a boost gauge. I am sure I won't grab as much air as you. I will say though my turbo is really whistleing when I am on it.
Ya we turn some heads!! I've heard that the early 99's have wicked-wheel type compressors. Also, what do you run for exhaust temps? We can't break 800 post-turbo, and that seems pretty good.
Mine is post turbo also and my numbers are near the same plus or minus, depending on the size of the mountian. Tranny is in the low 200's. I have heard too that our turbos are similar to Black Clouds. Maybe that is why they have not replied to my question.
Hey Iceman, keep us posted as to what your boss is saying. I would hate to think of anyone being stranded anywhere over a simple could of fixed it.
That's what IH means. What you would actually be looking for is an International Truck and Engine dealer since there hasn't been an International Harvester (tractor)dealer for nearly two decades since Case bought them out.
