Everytime I take off from a dead stop; there is a clunk coming from somewhere in the drive train. I don't think its the U-joints because sometimes my truck will move 2 - 5 feet before it happens. Has anyone else experienced this?
this is the infamous driveshaft clunk. what you need to do, is drop the driveshaft, mark both halves, and grease the splines inside. i believe the grease is a special kind, i think its blue. someone can elaborate.
To check the slip yoke and the u-joints do it in nutral and no e-brake block the wheels so it will not roll. Move the u-joints in each direction of rotation check for play same with yoke. If it u-joints feels loose relace them. If yoke moves to much in splines lubing it
may only mask it for a short time.
I just replaced my driveshaft because the splines were worn badly. I had the same type of clunk and the u-joints were all tight. I believe the grease that you should use is XG-8.
I got a new one as I priced it to be rebuilt and it was like less than $100 difference, and the new one came with new carrier bearing and all new u-joints. I was shocked that they cost what they do, mine was $550,00 from the dealer. The new one is much beefier than the old one. The Ford tech said that they did have problems with them in th early 99's.
