So I've got a bachelor party this weekend, and part one is the obligatory bachelor party stuff. But tomorrow afternoon, we're going fishing out of Atlantic City and should be out for only about 4 hours. I know we can't be going to far out, and I normally don't mind boats, but I don't want to be stuck out there with a wicked hangover AND sea sickness. I've been fishing before and never had a problem, last year though I went sailing, and couldn't get back to land soon enough...maybe too slow? I don't know. Some things to consider first:
A. We will be drinking on the boat (we have a captain and some hotel rooms for when we get back...it is AC after-all ) I'm assuming that some, if not all remedies will limit me to water...I'd rather the beer though, so, maybe nothing that will interact bad with alcohol? I don't even know if that matters.
B. I tried Dramamine once before, and LITERALLY slept an entire day. I think I got up once to...uh, evacuate, but that was it.
There are 2 kinds of dramamine now, its called dramamine 2 or non-drowsy formula or something, its a lot better than original dramamine. I think the ingredient is meclazine, read the lables, they look similar. It has worked for me. Not sure about its beer compatibility.
Peanut butter. Not sure how good it'll be with the beer, but it works. Dramamine non drowsy is what I used on the ship (yep, I was a seasick sailor, on an aircraft carrier... ), and it works great, but you have to take it before you get sick...
I worked a season on a commercial crab-fishing boat, and I used the scopolamine patch. Worked great, without it I spent most of my time on the boat leaning over the railing chumming the sharks...
Had to get a prescription for it though, don't know if there's an OTC version available these days. Didn't make me drowsy, but gave me a helluva case of cotton mouth!
I've got one for you that works like a charm... Ginger Root suppliments. You should be able to find them at your local drug store with all the other vitamins and stuff. The stuff is amazing. It is just as good as Dramamine but it doesn't make you drowsy.
Bruker...I've heard that before but only once. Funny you mention it, I was just drinking with the guy who's old man told me that...."drink a glass of this, and you can drink all night long and not be sick tomorrow". I was up real late, but felt like roadkill the next morning.
Thanks for all of your tips. I'm not sure I get them all (ginger root? I wonder why? How about just gin? ) but I'm sure I'm going to try them.
Well, due to the poor planning that comes with the territory when you're in your twenties and hungover, none of us got anything for the trip. The best we could do was Blackberry Brandy and two cases of beer.
The weather was incredible. We only made it out about 4 miles, caught a bunch of Blackfish, and started coming in for some Striper. It got a little cool, and the swells a little bigger as the sun set, but nothing ridiculous. We didn't get a single bite from the Stripers. The Blackfish though, we had our limit in about 1 hour. I mean, LITERALLY, our weights weren't hitting bottom before we had to reel in again. Good times. When all was said and done, I won the pool for biggest fish (17.5") and even caught the first fish on the trip.
A lot of sailors swear by Ginger Snap cookies. It's the Ginger. Make sure you get the softer kind and not those (Nabisco) that are hard enough to break your teeth.
Well after this weekend, I'm sure we're all going to be going fishing a lot more often. I hadn't gone in forever and forgot how good of a time it can be with the right people and drink selection.
Like Tiger said...Transderm-scop is a patch of scopolomine thats time released and works the best of ANYTHING that Ive ever used.
Have to respectfully disagree with the idea that motion sickness is 95% mental and that one is able to tell oneself not to get sick....Ive gotten motion sick since I was a baby in my moms arms ...tried telling myself plenty of time...doesnt work....the patch does work and is the ticket to avoid that mess of bad feelings...need prescription from your Doc....
