Hello everyone, we just rebuilt my 460 with a good amount of performance parts and one of those is a high-volume oil pump. Well, when we try to break the engine in, oil comes out the breather filter on the valve cover. It therefore heads on down to the red hot headers and proceeds to smoke and occasionally light. Obviously this isn't supposed to happen, but I am trying to figure out why it is happening and how I can go about stopping it.
Ok, that is odd. I cant help too much, not being the 460 guru, but this one sounds simple. It sounds like a plugged oil return from the heads. Take the valve covers off and find something to poke down the return tube to remove any clogs. Now that I think about it, compressed air may work better.
Being a new engine build, I have to wonder why there is anything there to plug it up in the first place.
Just a thought... If the lifters are not adjusted correctly, they can possibly flow a lot of oil thru the pushrods. More than you want. I haven't given it a lot of thought, but the oil flows into the pushrod when the valve is on the seat, and the flow is stopped when the lifter is trying to compress the valve spring. If you tighten up the valve train, it may slow the flow as it will lessen the time (marginally) that the lifter is free to flow oil.

There are two types of valve covers-baffled and non-baffled. The baffles are usually designed for stock type valve trains where clearance of the rockers isn't an issue. Non baffled covers are usually designed taller also to clear roller rockers and stud girdles. However, they do make push in breather grommets with baffles to help with blow-by. Summit and Jegs both carry them. Hope this helps.-P.
Like Pete said above, are you using aftermarket valve covers? I used my stock ones on my Thunderbird's 302, but I had to remove the baffles to clear my roller rockers. What a mess. I have a Moroso push in breather but when I removed the baffles to clear the new rockers, it was saturated with oil and started dripping right away. I've actually been stuffing a folder up paper towel under the breather every fill up all summer because I 've been too busy working on my truck rebuild to install a proper baffle. I'm running a new (but stock) oil pump fyi, so if this is your problem, your high volume pump is going to be even worse. Also, if your oil returns are plugged, first I would be very concerned as to why they are plugged on a fresh engine and second, I wouldn't just push the obstruction through because what ever it is, it should not be in your engine! The inside of an engine should be clean clean clean!!!
