I have a 98 ranger 2.5 standard and it had started to make a clicking noise at high rpm but now it has progressed and now even makes this noise when I am idling in neutral. It sounds like it is coming from underneath the cab of the truck. Can somebody give me any ideas what to look for? Thanks
Check the tensioner pully. I have the same motor and that's the next replacement for me. The way to tell is to get a really long screwdriver, extension or something of that sort, put the end of it on all of your pullies and put your thumb over the end. Put your ear on your thumb and listen for a grinding noise. You'll hear a normal, consistent grind on most, but if you hear any sort of surge or fluctuations, that may be the culprit.
It almost sounds like it could be an exhaust leak. Get under your truck like natebaker said to see if you can pin point the location of exactly where it is coming from.
